The Giants’ opening day roster came into clearer focus Friday when the Giants announced they had traded second baseman Kevin Frandsen to the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later.
The Giants also optioned outfielder Darren Ford to Double-A and outfielder Francisco Peguero to Class A. They also reassigned pitcher Tony Pena and first baseman Jesus Guzman to minor league camp.
The moves cut the Giants’ spring training roster to 39 players. The trade of Frandsen was also important because it opened a spot on the team’s 40-man roster. That’s important because pitchers Todd Wellemeyer and Guillermo Mota are non-roster invitees who are strong candidates to make the opening day roster. If both make the club, someone else on the 40-man roster would have to go, most likely outfielder Fred Lewis.
